Drunk driving has caused lots of accidents, deaths, and pain to loved ones around the world. Over 11,000 people die or sustain severe injuries yearly from drunk driving, constituting about 24% of all accidents.
These being just a few reasons why drivers are advised not to drink and drive. To further educate drivers on the dangers of drinking while driving, here are four reasons why drivers should not drink and drive.
- Increases the blood alcohol content (BAC) of the body: Upon consuming alcohol, the blood alcohol content level rises. Legally, a person with a BAC level of 0.08% is considered ineligible to drive. Different stages of BAC have various adverse effects.
- 03-0.12% BAC causes impaired judgments, increased sociability, and redness of the face.
- 09-0.25% BAC causes sedation, balance problems, and blurred vision.
- 18-0.30% BAC causes profound confusion, slurred speech, dizziness, and nausea.
- 25-0.40% BAC causes stupor, unconsciousness, vomiting, and anterograde amnesia.
These affect the ability of the driver to make in-time decisions while driving and could result in serious injuries or death for both the driver and the passenger.
- Inability to see properly: It is a known fact that the eyes are an aid to driving. However, when a driver consumes alcohol, it impairs the vision of the driver. These occur because of the reactions of the alcohol in the body.
- To prevent accidents: Driving requires utmost concentration and the ability to maneuver huddles on the road. However, alcohol impairs the ability to make the right decision and to articulate thoughts. These all eventually result in accidents and sometimes loss of lives.
- Damage to properties: One of the properties lost from accidents due to drunk driving is the vehicle. Even when the driver is lucky, there is still the setback of the damaged vehicle. These include expenses for repairs and even sometimes for replacement.
